Building a modest capsule wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe isn't about owning less for its own sake. It's about owning the right things — pieces that talk to each other, so getting dressed becomes a pleasure instead of a negotiation.

Here's a framework to start from. Adjust it to your climate, your life, and your taste.

The ten pieces

  1. A fluid wide-leg trouser in a neutral
  2. A longline tunic that works over trousers and under coats
  3. One excellent everyday abaya
  4. A crisp white shirt, oversized
  5. A knit dress for the in-between days
  6. A structured outer layer — trench or tailored coat
  7. Two hijabs in your most-worn shades
  8. A slip skirt, midi or maxi
  9. Comfortable flats you'd actually walk in
  10. One occasion piece you feel completely yourself in

How to make it work

The secret isn't the list — it's the palette. Choose two neutrals and one accent, and buy within it. When everything shares a colour story, every piece multiplies.

A capsule is finished not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left you'd want to.

Then give yourself permission to take your time. Capsules are built season by season, one considered piece at a time. The directory is a good place to start looking — filter by category, find a brand whose values match yours, and buy once, well.
